Facts Catphishing

Catphishing is when a person uses a false identity to get to know you on the internet with the goal of starting a fake emotional or romantic relationship with you.

The ulterior motive can be to cheat you out of money, or to humiliate you - by publishing your conversations, for example. Finding out if you’re being catphished is not easy. The relationship and trust is often built up during a long period of the catphish making an effort to get to know you and make you feel seen.

Warning signs

Warning signs can be:

  • The person is too good to be true
  • The person is unreasonably attractive
  • The person appears out of nowhere
  • The person would rather not communicate via video chats.

Often, the person will agree to meet, online or offline, but cancels at the last minute because of some kind of crisis. Catphishing can be a crime. Depending on what type of relationship you have had, it can have different titles. For example, it could be harassment or fraud.
