Facts What are core values and what do they do?

Your basic values that create an active member’s or the organization’s norms and actions.

It is up to each organization to formulate and enforce your own core values. Research in this field shows that core values are created by different values and norms which set the framework for what is seen as good and right.

This can include certain basic principles, like equality for all, but also the framework that everyone within the organization is aware of and lives by.

The Cyber Hate Assistant’s view on core values

We believe that core values need to be a living document and should therefore be worded in as concrete terms as possible, instead of long empty sentences.

If you word your core values in concrete terms and with examples from real-life situations, you make it possible for everyone in the organization to use the core values as a tool. Also, let everyone be a part of the development of your core values so that everyone feels represented by them and excited to use them!

The importance of working norm-critically

Since the core values are made of the norms and values, it is important to critically examine and reflect on which norms and people are currently a part of the organization. If you seem to have a relatively homogeneous organization, the norms that already exist might make it difficult to develop inclusive core values.

Inclusive development of core values means that we make room for everyone to be an active member or staff in the organization, regardless of their disability, expression, or appearance, and regardless of if everyone is already represented.
